Welcome to the USA – Badlands National Park
Well, we’re in the United States. They let us in and our car 🙂 Border police were not particularly interested in us. Just asked the standard question of what we are doing here, whether we have family in the USA, etc. They did not even look in the fridge.
The first miracle of nature that we want to visit in the states is Badlands National Park. It is difficult not to agree with those that gave this place such a name. Two hundred years ago this wasn’t the best of places to live in, but nowadays you can enter and just admire them. And that’s because things are a little out of this earth, or maybe straight from Mars. The famous “Dancing with the Wolves” with the talented Kevin Costner, was filmed in this scenery.
True, the views are breath-taking. But, in addition to the views, there are also animals. We are, after all, on the great prairies. Hundreds of years ago, these areas were populated by bison. Millions of them! During the wild west era everything changed. Out of millions of bison, upon which several indigenous tribes depended on to survive, less than a thousand were left. Protection programs prevented the extinction of the species. Today we still can admire the huge bison crossing this lands! One just has to stop and admire them. The new settlers tried to tame the land … but nature fought back. Eventually they won the battle making it possible for us to visit and enjoy this wonder.
But apart from these large animals, the tiny ones, like the prairie dogs, also deserve attention. Cute little ones who spend all their time searching for food.
Enchanted by the beauty of this area, we decided for the first time in our life to see the top view from a helicopter. True, it leaves a mark on you!
A short distance from the Badlands, westwards, is a well-known mountain with the image of four US presidents. We are speaking of Mount Rushmore, of course. We just drove by, skipping the crowds and parking queues, enjoying the views from the road 🙂 Since 1948, and still far from being finished, the indigenous people are sculpting, in a nearby mountain (Thunderhead Mountain), a representation of the Indian Leader, Crazy Horse. It is worth noting that they do so without the support of any national funds, but only from donations. The artist who undertook this work was Korczak Ziółkowski, a descendant of Poles in the United States.
We are heading straight to Yellowstone, but we cannot stay indifferent to one another impressive nature creation.
