The wonders of Oregon and the wonder city in California
So far, Oregon wins from all the states visited. It has an ocean coast, good food, (an important feature for Sergio), volcanoes and, most important to Marzena, it has mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts and a unique forest. But first things first.
After the luxuries of visiting Sarah and Andrew, we had to get back to our normal life. Now, driving south of Oregon, we passed a volcano, (which we saw from a boat from the Columbia River), and drove through the driest area we have so far. From a distance, we had already seen the Mount Mazama, which contains our next visiting spot, Crater Lake. And here is what we saw!.
After traveling around the crater, eating a second breakfast with a wonderful view, we went further along the road, towards the coast, in a place which from the very beginning was the goal of our trip before we met Andrew and Sarah.
It’s the forest with the tallest trees on our planet. Redwoods. They make a quit big impression on you with their size. You can get a neck twist neck while admiring them. Only 5% of them still stand from what the settlers found here less than 200 years ago! Such a shame.
And we forgot to mention that we are already in California. What is it associated with? For us it’s San Francisco. Slowly, just because of the scenery nothing related with the performance of the car, we are heading to San Francisco, driving along the coast, road number 1, a beautiful serpentine on the cliffs just above the Pacific.
On the way, by chance, we ran into a charming town where we stopped for coffee and something sweet for coffee. By the way, Sergio discovered that a small Portuguese community, manly from Azores Islands, immigrated here in the past. They still keep their roots well alive.
Going further to the south, we had this amazing views.
Golden Gate, the golden entry to the city. We stay for the night at the motel. It’s hard to visit a big city with a vehicle such as ours, and even more difficult to camp in it. Walking on foot is also not easy – constantly uphill, downhill too, but somehow, it seemed, not that often 🙂 We tried the local specialties on the fisherman’s wharf- Sergio chose a chowder clams served in bread, Marzena, chose a roll with a salad and local crabs and shrimps.
Another attraction of San Francisco known to the whole world are the sea lions, which dominated the pier No. 39. About 2,000 of them made this their home. Noisy giants basking in the sun with a view of Alcatraz.
And to finish in class our visit to the city we did this:
It is one of the streets with the largest number of curves in such a short length. Sergio was proud of his UMM! Driving down the road without using the brake. Such miracles only in UMM. It was a spectacle inside a spectacle.
We said goodbye to San Francisco and moved east.
