One day we decided to travel. One day we decided to visit all world. One day we bought the UMM to go with us. We wanted to go back to Africa and explore it more. It took 5 years to be ready. Meanwhile, we changed the country where we were living in, got new jobs, bought a new flat, sold the new flat and Marzena got older : ) But Africa needs to wait – we want to explore the New World first –
a trip through 3 Americas is going to begin. Stay tunned.
Bolivia
Welcome to Bolivia, host of some of the highest spots in the Americas such as the Nevado Sajama, with an altitude of 6,542 meters. The western part, which we travelled, is located at an altitude of about 4000m above sea level. We are fortunate that we do not feel the effects of altitude sickness, at […]
Magical Peru
One more border to cross. On the map a fancy line divides the two countries. On the ground it’s a muddy road crossed by a river that separates Ecuador and Peru. In the Ecuador side there was no one at the customs office. Had to shout “buenos dias” and after some minutes the officer appeared […]
Ecuador
Excitement rose as we were approaching the equator line. Nothing would stop us now! For the second time we would stand at latitude 0°. The first time was at Ilhéu das Rolas, in São Tomé e Príncipe. Now it’s time for the equator in America. However, before we reached the 0 ° latitude, we had […]
Colombia – third and last round
Be advised: The following post may lead to unplanned expenses in the form of a trip to Colombia. UMMaventura is not responsible of it. Everyone reads at their own risk 🙂 With UMM reborn and pumped up we took on the next Colombian roads. Nothing scare us anymore! From Bogota we went east, in the […]
Colombia – second round
All the scenic road routes came with additional costs. In one of them we lost the brakes. Like in the movies, just it wasn’t a movie. I went completely white, (Luís, maybe I’ve just found out the solution for your condition; no need to say thanks), when the brake pedal went straight to the floor, […]
Colombia – first impression
Welcome to last continent of our adventure, in the Americas, of course. We gave our first steps in South America in Cartagena. We flew from Panama City, and our beloved UMM sailed from Colon, arriving to Cartagena after a one-day cruise. It took us three days to finish all customs procedures and get back our […]
Costa Rica – Panama. End of North America.
Welcome to Costa Rica. For the night we set camp in front of the Reserva Biologica Lomas Bardudal rangers house and in the next day, early morning, we hiked through the jungle. During the hike we meet a family of Capuchin monkeys. At first they looked distrustful and did threaten us by grinning, but over […]
Honduras-Nicaragua
We entered Honduras from the north, from the Caribbean Sea. The weather was unfortunately not the best. Was raining and the wind was blowing strong. The sea was brown, not blue as it should, due to rivers flowing from nearby hills. We headed towards San Pedro Sula to meet a friend from work. Already during […]
Guatemala – heart of the Maya world
Welcome to Guatemala, the Maya world with the most famous ruins in Tikal, but we did not visit them, because it is a tourist trap – it will dry your pockets out! We saw other ruins and decided to look for some new experience. On almost empty roads, from North to South, we saw people […]
Belize – heaven on earth
I must admit that I did not know much about Belize before we came here, therefore I had to rely on the outstanding geographic and historical knowledge of Sergio. The man never ceases to amaze me! This tiny country, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, has beautiful beaches, blue waters, and white sand. But […]
Rich Yucatán Peninsula
We were now in Maya realm, well only at its gates because it stretches to the whole of the Yucatán peninsula, the Mexican states of Chiapas, Belize, Guatemala and even Honduras. But time will come for everything. For the first contact with this civilization, we choose the archaeological site in Palenque. Before we got there […]
Gulf of Mexico
We continue our journey east, towards the Gulf of Mexico. The first goal was Tuxpan, where we would meet Ze Paulo, our friend from work in Poland. Arrived to Tuxpan and driving along the promenade towards the campground, we were stopped by municipal police. We were about to be accused of driving a heavy truck […]
First SPA in Mexico
For several months, Sergio, threatened that his time to rest was approaching and he would finally rest! The true expedition would start in Mexico and end in Argentina. In contrast to Canada and United States, which were largely planned by Marzena, a Polish woman, this meant that we had to see EVERYTHING that we could […]
Magic places in Mexico
We’re going to Tuxpan Vera Cruz, on the east coast. On the way, we drove through Barranca del Cobre, Copper Canyon. It is bigger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. We stopped in Durango for the night. The rain did not leave us, but at least it wasn’t cold. In the evening we visited the […]
Sergio gone mad in Mexico
Greetings from Mexico. The border crossing between the States and Mexico went smoothly. Marzena didn’t even need to leave the car to get her visa done. The car had its inspection done in just a few minutes. The food in the fridge was of no interest to the nice police lady. She was more interested […]
US last stage
Going west, after parting with Andrea and Thomas, such shapes loomed on the horizon, letting us know what awaited us. Monument Valley. The place is known for the western movies, which were shot there; about 100 of them (westerns and not only). The entire area belongs to the Navajo Indian Tribal Park. However, before we […]
Utah with Andrea & Thomas
We run away from the heat of Nevada and headed up to the next state, Utah. The name of the state probably comes from the names of indigenous Americans – Ute Indians. There are two theories for the origin of the word: the first says that it comes from the dialect Ute, meaning “people of […]
A city in a desert
Death Valley. We arrived to our chosen overnight camp, on the side of a mountain leading to the valley, just after dark. It was one of the worst nights that Marzena had ever experienced. It wasn’t cold, the sky was beautiful with stars all around and we got the last spot available! How lucky can […]
Up & Down in Sierra Nevada
After the luxuries of San Francisco we returned to our normal routine. Our next was to make a loop east, up to Colorado. The dates were tight because back in Oregon we agreed with Andrea and Thomas to visit Utah’s parks together. Driving east of San Francisco, we had to cross the Sierra Nevada, part […]
The wonders of Oregon and the wonder city in California
So far, Oregon wins from all the states visited. It has an ocean coast, good food, (an important feature for Sergio), volcanoes and, most important to Marzena, it has mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts and a unique forest. But first things first. After the luxuries of visiting Sarah and Andrew, we had to get back to […]
With a visit to Sarah and Andrew
Destiny is a mix of chance and luck. That’s the only way to explain ending up at the same campground that Andrew and Sarah choose! We rarely camp in state parks or national park campgrounds. Only when in need of a nice shower and that happens only when the dust on our body can be […]
West Coast
We did not make reservation for the ferry in Victoria on the Vancouver Island. Why should we? We have time. And what if we like it so much and decided to stay longer?! Three hours before the planned ferry we arrived and were informed that on the 10:30 ferry there was a 30% chance of […]
Vancouver and Vancouver Island
We reached the western end of Canada. The time difference is 8h back compared to Portugal. We camped in a campsite about 10 km from the center and prepare to explore the city. We started by visiting VanDusen Botanical Garden and China Town. Then we had to try Asian food. Had to start with sushi, […]
Banff and Jasper National Park
And again in Canada. Had, once again, no problems crossing the border. Fires and smoke, unfortunately, knows no boundaries. Everything was smoky. We pass through Kootenay National Park, we witnessed active fires and the destruction that it leaves behind. Almost the whole park was closed. We were only able to choose a small hike in […]
Glacier National Park
The coldest park is, of course, the Glacier National Park. At the beginning of the park’s existence, in the 1910s, there were about 80 of them. Currently, there are only 36. They are melting. The predictions say that they should all be gone in 2030. So, let’s hurry to see this beautiful corner of our […]
Friends from Butte, Montana
Leaving Yellowstone heading north we found ourselves in Montana. We had a lot to drive, because the state of Montana is bigger than then Poland. We stayed for a night near Butte. Found a nice place in a forest clearance that is also very popular with the locals. The spot was named by them as […]
Yellowstone National Park
It’s time to visit the Yogi Bear. You just have to remember not to leave the picnic baskets unattended. It’s just a cartoon, but the message is real. Everywhere there is information that we are in a bear country and tips on how to behave. Well, bears will not only come be for food, but […]
UMM – Standard Service
Even such a reliable car as a 30-year UMM, needs some attention from the owner, a loyal fan of the brand.
Welcome to the USA – Badlands National Park
Well, we’re in the United States. They let us in and our car 🙂 Border police were not particularly interested in us. Just asked the standard question of what we are doing here, whether we have family in the USA, etc. They did not even look in the fridge. The first miracle of nature that […]
Ontario – Part Three – Lake Superior
Water, water, water. There is water everywhere in Canada. It is not known whether this is a land with a large number of lakes or the other way around. In Poland there is a region named the land of a thousand lakes (Masuria), Canada should be named the land of a million lakes. It is […]
Ontario – Part Two – Canada Day
Planning is not our specialty. We know where we want to go, at least we think we do, allowing ourselves time to reach it. Anyway, the planned route also changes under the influence of people we meet along the way. The most important date for Canadians was approaching, and we had to decide where we […]
Ontario – Part One – Forts
Following along the Saint Lawrence river we crossed the border of another province without even noticing it. We’re already in Ontario. After experiencing a overcrowded Montreal, we concluded that big cities were not for us. So we decided to bypass Ottawa, the capital, and head to Niagara Falls. But before we got there a lot […]
Quebec – French side of Canada
15-20, 24-28 June 2018 1500 km It is enough to cross the border into Quebec to immediately feel the differences – everyone around speaks French, all signs are in French, KFC is now PFK and can only be recognized by the logotype. Well, we were told that we would find Quebeckers not to be as […]
New Brunswick
12-15 and 20-24 June 2018 2ooo km The weather since the beginning of our trip was not the best but so far we had managed. But in New Brunswick it was too much – rain, wind, cold – made it almost impossible to camp and explore. We fled to the next province for a moment […]
Prince Edward Island
9-12 June 2018 585 km From Nova Scotia we took off to Island of Prince Edward by ferry. A small, mainly agricultural island with a great history, Charlottetown Conference took place here, and … a fictional figure known all around the world, well at least in Poland. The previous post was an announcement of what […]
Where is Sergio?
Who will guess where we are now? First person who will respond correctly, will get a postcard from us 🙂
Nova Scotia
28.05.2018 – 9.06.2018 3.034 KM Halifax welcomed us with the sun. We had our last meal on board and went ashore. We booked a stay in a student house in the city centre, the cheapest option 🙂 Super conditions. In Halifax, we spent 3 days visiting the city, picking up the car from customs clearance […]
Atlantic sea
Crossing the Atlantic took us 7 days. The weather was good, it did not sway too much. Container ship had only 12 passengers, experienced travelers (except us :). Przeprawa przez Atlantyk zajęła nam 7 dni. Pogoda sprzyjała, nie kołysało za bardzo. Kontenerowiec miał tylko 12 pasażerów, sami doświadczeni podróżnicy (oprócz nas :).
Liverpool
We spent a couple of days visiting Liverpool. W oczekiwaniu na statek spędzilismy w Liverpoolu parę dni.
First stage – Liverpool Car drop off
So our first stage is now done. We arrived to Liverpool and dropped UMM in the port. Now we have to wait till day 21 to set sail to Halifax. All went well except for the time in France when the wiper rods gaine a life of their own and just took off! During this […]
UMM History
The UMM 4×4 design is derived from a prototype created by the French engineering firm Cournil, called Entrepreneur. The Cournil Entrepreneur’s building rights were acquired by the Portuguese company União Metalo-Mecânica, part of the Mocar group and were renamed as UMM. They became known for their durability, especially when in the Paris-Dakar rally the team […]
I travel the world and the seven seas.
So it is decided. In May, we will start our trip. First steps are predicted. It will start in Portugal, then 21st of May the three of us will cross Atlantic starting in Liverpool and heading to Halifax, Canada. From there, anything can happen. Please keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned.
